World Animal Week 2007

World Animal Week 2007 was a huge success. Groups and supporters from around the world celebrated these seven special days by gathering over 100,000 signatures in support of the Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare.

Latest news

Animal Friends Croatia collected signatures by sending letters and DVDs to high and elementary schools in Croatia. They invited the schools to participate in a series of lectures about the Universal Declaration, to help educate Croatian children about animal welfare. AFC also collected signatures by setting up stalls and contacting local media for support.

ACRES (Singapore) held a 3-day animal-themed festival called "Animals Matter to Me" in Singapore's city centre to raise awareness about the UDAW and collect signatures. It took place at a covered outdoor exhibition in the centre of town, known as The Atrium@ Orchard.

The SPCA in Selangor (Malaysia) collected petitions through online communications, at schools and colleges, at supermarkets, family fairs as well as contacting local businesses.

Spolecnost Pro Zvirata (Czech Republic) translated Animals Matter resources into Czech and made themavailable on their website. They also collected signatures online and at info stalls.

Nadace na ochranu zvirat (Czech Republic) collected signatures at a series of events in Prague throughout September and October.

ADDA (Spain) collected signatures at their annual ANIMALADDA exhibition in Barcelona.

Southend Animal Aid (UK) held an information and awareness stall in their local high street in Southend on sea, Essex. They also had a collection box to ask members of the public to donate items such as hay and old towels and pet food which will be donated to a local animal sanctuary.

The Animal Welfare Coalition (Philippines) launched the UDAW campaign in July 07 and has been collecting signatures in malls, schools, universities and traffic areas – some 4,300 so far. AWC organized an event called “Animal Blessing” on October 7, 2007 to celebrate World Animal Day and collected petition signatures.

SCAD (Thailand) organized a fundraising event called “Emporium Pet Passion Week” in partnership with the Emporium Department Store, on October 16 – 21, 2007 to fundraise for its Animal Birth Control, Education and Adoption Programmes, and to promote the UDAW petition campaign.

WSPA Asia organized Thai celebrities’ endorsements on the Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare (UDAW), and are rolling out the campaign in universities in Bangkok and its outskirts through the rest of 2007.

Drustvo Prijatelja Zivotinja (Ljubimci) Pancevo (Serbia) celebrated WAW 07 with a stall in Pancevo’s central square, some promotional work in the media, and lobbied the local town councilors to discuss the new municipal animal protection act.

Redamma (Mexico) collected signatures via their website.

Fundación Luka hosted an Animals Matter exhibition in October.

APA (Nicaragua) collected signatures throughout September & October in the cities of  Matagalpa, León, Masaya and Managua.

APREFLOFAS (Costa Rica) collected signatures in conjunction with their work to pass a new Wildlife Bill.

Las Pumas Rescue Center (Costa Rica) collected signatures at their booth exhibition.

FABA (Argentina) collected signatures at their mobile clinics and on their website.

WSPA Netherlands officially launched the UDAW in the region and asked a local celebrity to be the official 700,000 th signatory.

WSPA Brasil has sent all Brazilian WSPA member societies UDAW materials (posters, t-shirts, leaflets and ribbons) to be included in their own World Animal Week activities. They also organized a 2-day event in Brasilia which included educational activities for schools on animal welfare in the city park, and an exhibition in the congress hall by schools, followed by the building of a UDAW ribbon on the grounds in front of the congress.

WSPA USA has been working with Care2 to collecting thousands of signatures – over 40,000 so far!

WSPA New Zealand ran a promotion in the country’s 27 Body Shop stores.

Karen Walker, one of NZ’s top fashion designers, designed a t-shirt for the event. During World Animal Week Body Shop customers were encouraged to purchase a t-shirt and sign the UDAW petition.

The Auckland SPCA handed out UDAW petition postcards at its animal blessings this World Animal Week. Find out more about the animal blessings here.

The Centre for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Ukraine) held their annual film festival in Kiev and are collecting signatures for the UDAW.

WSPA Africa worked with WSPA member society Dar Animal Haven Jane Goodall’s Roots and Shoots and organized a procession of 500 people, including 400 school children, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The procession was given the blessing of the Tanzanian Ministry of Livestock Development, which is currently busy formulating a new Animal Welfare Act in the country.

WSPA South America has sent t-shirts, posters and fliers to a large group of member societies in the region which encouraged them to continue collecting signatures during their own activities for World Animal Week.

In Colombia, Defenzoores held an education activity in Bogotá and printed posters which have been placed in all the city’s metro stations. They also collected signatures during the University Week Expo, which attracts a very large number of visitors every year.

ASOGUAU in Venezuela collected petitions at their annual animal blessing.

PAE in Quito, Ecuador, has continued to gathersignatures through their web page and physically, held public awareness activities during this week.

There were also many more activities through groups in Peru and Uruguay.
